Rights, Laws and Culture: Comparing Palestine and UK

May Nasrawi is a Palestinian student who is over in the north east of England doing a Social Work Studies course at Durham University. She has been on a placement with Investing in Children and recently ran a seminar here at the project which focused on young people and respect.

One of her observations was the difference in attitude towards children and young people here in the UK compared to her home in Palestine. May reflected that in a country where there are regular human rights violations, the relationship between young people and older people is based on respect and that she found it shocking when she first came here to discover how negative the media portrayal of our young people can be.

She was also shocked to find the shop notices 'only 2 children at a time' or 'no children unless accompanied by a responsible adult': this does not happen in her experience back at home……listen to what she has to say in this clip.
